With one Warholesque stroke of magic, Nico became world famous in The Velvet Underground in 1967 as the mysterious tall blonde with a dark voice and equal parts masculine and feminine charisma. When we meet her 20 years later, fame has become a nightmare. Her career is ailing, like the old tour bus she uses to travel through Europe, and the weary-of-life and heroin-shooting Nico has lost faith in everything – except her son Ari, who is in foster care. 'Nico, 1988' depicts the last two years of the charismatic artist's life, and Trine Dyrholm carries both the role and the entire film. With her stature, a driven German accent and wonderful voice, she lends Nico a body and life – exactly 30 years after she herself enjoyed Warholesque fame with the Danish Eurovision contender 'Danser i måneskin'.
